Welcome Canada Benefit
In today's day and age, there are a lot of misconceptions regarding everything, and "Welcome Canada Benefit" is none other than that. There are several misconceptions concerning the "Welcome to Canada" cash bonus that international students, particularly those from India, have heard about. You won't be able to find such a phrase or term on the official website of the Canada Revenue Agency since it DOES NOT EXIST.
The actual benefits for which the individuals are eligible are the federal and state benefits, such as the Trillium Benefit in Ontario, the Solidarity Tax Credits (STC) in Quebec, and GST/HST sales-tax credits, which can only be claimed by filing a tax return. Depending on your province, the credits might range from roughly $200 to $700 annually.
Although they have to record ZERO dollars in income, many overseas students fail to realise that completing a tax return is part of the process of collecting these benefits. I checked the whole list of benefits on the CRA, but there is no such "Welcome to Canada Benefit or Credit." There are a number of federal and provincial advantages and credits that are linked to submitting a tax return, but that is not one of them.
International students mostly benefit from GST/HST credits, which are distributed quarterly to citizens with modest incomes to offset the sales tax they must pay when purchasing items. Instead, I would encourage international students to complete the "GST/HST Credit Application for Individuals who Become Residents of Canada After Arriving in Canada" form (RC151) and mail it to the Canada Revenue Agency. They do not need an accountant to complete this straightforward two-page application. Here is the link to this application:
